TE WAIROA E WHANAKE |
AHI KōMAU GEMMELL'S

Ahi Kōmau is a key initiative in the revitalization of Wairoa’s town center, made possible through the support of the Provincial Growth Fund and Wairoa District Council.

At the heart of this project is a two-story building that suffered extensive fire damage in 2012 and remained abandoned until 2020. This structure now serves as a foundation for vibrant public and commercial spaces overlooking the Wairoa River.

Our design approach emphasizes layering new elements onto the existing framework, enhancing and reimagining the original concrete walls.

The development centers around a public courtyard, sheltered by a glass roof, creating an inviting space for all to enjoy. This area will serve not only as a gathering spot for restaurant patrons but also as a venue for community and social events.

Additionally, two retail spaces complement the development, connected by a covered alleyway that links the courtyard to the Marine Parade riverfront and extends to Queen Street.

To enhance the connection with the river, an elevated viewing platform will provide visitors with a distinctive vantage point of Marine Parade, allowing them to experience the area from a unique perspective (with future development planned).
